Clinical Oncology : embraces the non-surgical aspect of oncology. It covers both the therapeutic administration of ionising radiation (radiotherapy) and cytotoxic chemotherapy. Clinical oncology is a major participant in any multi-disciplinary team, which would meet regularly to discuss site specific cases of tumours. Radiotherapy is the administration of ionising radiation predominantly by external beam (teletherapy) but is also using the more technical operative implantation of interstitial sources, which are often after loaded with radioactive material, e.g. Iridium. Clinical oncology is very patient orientated.
